This article shows you some differences between Drywood and Subterranean termite that you need to know. And later on, you can do everything you can to prevent or treat the infestation in your house.
These are some of the different things you can find on the two Drywood and Subterranean termites.
1. Where they live
The first of the four differences between Drywood and Subterranean termite is where they live. Drywood termite lives inside the wood they infest. As the name says, the woods are always dry and have low moisture. They don’t need access to any soil or using mud tubes. They infest your home by air (flying). So it is possible for Drywood termite to live in your beloved furniture, whether it is interior or exterior.
On the other hand, Subterranean termite lives in the soil, in the ground. They love moisture, They invade your home using mud tubes as their tunnel from the soil to your home. This tube protects them from predators’ attacks and dehydration.
2. Termite excrement
Their way to leave their excrement is the next difference between Drywood and Subterranean termite. Drywood termites kick-out and push their excrement out from the hole of the infested wood. The excrement resembles saw-dust piles that you might find around the infested furniture or woodwork.
On the other hand, the Subterranean termites usually don’t leave their excrements on the open air. Mostly the excrement was inside the wood. But at the same time, they use the mix of their excrement, mud, and saliva to build their mud tube.
3. Feeding Pattern
Both of the termites have their favorite food. If you found termites that happily munching your furniture that far from wet areas and mostly dry. Then it must be Drywood termite. You can see their destruction pattern mostly irregular because they eat across the grains of the wood.
In contrast with Drywood termite, the Subterranean termite appears a little bit picky. They only chew on the softest part of the wood, which is mostly found between the grains. If you find a neat destruction pattern inside the wood then most likely the Subterranean termite is the guilty party. This is the easiest difference between Drywood termite and Subterranean termite that you can find.
4. Wings and Appearance
The winged termites or alates shed their wings within minutes of landing. If you found wings with a complex system of veins, three or four vines each wing, then it must be Drywood termites’ wings. But if you found wings that have one single thick and dark vein that runs parallel to the top of the wing, it must belong to Subterranean termite.
